C8 Z06: Ultimate Corvette for Enthusiasts… or for Flippers?

C8 Z06

The C8 Z06 is anticipated to be a supercar beating machine. But will most buyers actually drive it, or will they flip it to make a quick buck?

The buzz surrounding the C8 Z06 is now a deafening roar. We have read the stats, heard the sounds and seen the pictures. This car is going to be a world-beater. The regular C8 Stingray already punches well above its weight class. But the Z06 is going to take things to the next level. Actually, it may jump a couple of levels. That is all great news for the Corvette enthusiast. We don’t know the exact pricing yet, but let’s assume it comes in at $100,000. That is a lot of money for sure but remember this car will be competitive against cars costing three or four times as much. That is more great news for the Corvette enthusiast. However, all this great news does have a bit of a dark side. Flippers.

The desirability of the C8 Z06 means that cars will likely change hands for well above MSRP. No matter what the price of the Z06 ends up being, it would not be surprising to see them go for $100K+ over sticker. With that being a real possibility, it is likely that many people out there will try to score a C8 Z06 not because it is an amazing sportscar. But because they see it as a way to make a quick buck. Those that have orders in at MSRP may be tempted to cash out shortly after delivery. That hurts in a couple of ways. First, all that does is drive up the price for everyone else trying to get the car because they actually like the car. Second, the original owner may have made money, but they are missing out on driving one of the best sports cars in the world.

Will most C8 Z06 buyers be long-term enthusiasts or short-term flippers?

Competitive Comparison

LT6

We already know that the C8 Z06 was benchmarked against some pretty heady competition. And from everything we know, the Corvette should be able to match or beat all of these other exotics. It puts the Corvette into uncharted territory from a performance standpoint. But also treads into uncharted territory from a markup perspective. The regular C8 already faced some markup issues with all the supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic. The Z06 will see that turned up to eleven. Six-figure and up markups will be common, we suspect. That makes it awfully tempting for flippers looking to make a quick score.

Porsche 911 GT3

Interior

The GT3 is one of the cars that the C8 Z06 will be compared to. The GT3 is produced in limited numbers, is widely regarded as one of the best sports cars you can buy, and has been the darling of the automotive press since it was released. All of this will also hold true with the C8 Z06. So, with that in mind let’s look at the GT3 to get a sense of what we might be in for with the Z06. A quick search of the automotive classified site Car Gurus shows over 50 current-generation GT3s offered for sale on the used market that have less than 1,000 miles on them. Everyone single one is asking for at least $100K over sticker. These are all flipper cars.

Selling So Soon?

Air Intake

Think about it. The GT3 is supposed to be this wonderful, passionate sports car. Yet dozens of them were dumped by the original owner aka “Flipper” after less than a thousand miles. If the car is so great, why sell so soon? Money. Sadly, the C8 Z06 may suffer the same fate. It will also be an epic car, but some buyers really don’t care about any of that. Flat-plane crank V8, who cares, when I can make money selling it? If you score an MSRP deal on a C8 Z06 and a month later a dealer offers you $50K over what you paid, will you sell it? Or did you buy the car because you actually love the car and want to drive it?

Are C8 Z06 Buyers Different?

Mint Green

Exotic car owners are a fickle bunch. Many just need to have the latest hot new thing. The newest Porsche comes out, they need to have it first. Then the newest Ferrari comes out and they sell that old news Porsche and grab the new Ferrari. And on it goes. They just have to have the latest and greatest. The C8 Z06 is really the first legitimate exotic/supercar with a Corvette badge. So, who will buy it? The Corvette faithful that buy the cars because they love them? Or the exotic car owner that has no loyalty at all and just wants the newest thing on the block and hopes to make money when they sell it two months later?

Please Drive It

C8 Z06 Flipper

Look we know that it is not easy to walk away from someone waving $50K in your face. But the C8 Z06 looks to be one of the greatest cars ever and possibly the peak of the internal combustion era. If you are lucky enough to be able to buy one, don’t you want to enjoy it and drive it? Sure, making money is fun too, but the reason you have money is to spend it on great experiences. And the C8 Z06 looks to be one hell of an experience. If you sell your Z06, what do you replace it with? A GT3? Why bother? Keep the Z06. If you have a C8 Z06 in your garage you are already winning at life. Staring at your bank statement will never give you the same thrill as hearing that V8 hit 8,000 rpm as you are going through a tunnel.
